I attended a risk management conference last week, and one of my most important takeaways was the need to be more well-read. As a risk management professional, I seek to be more informed about news & current events, global business climate, and important business transactions among other things. Since returning home, this has been on my mind, and I have explored subscriptions to a few publications.
Yesterday morning, during my daily devotional time, the Lord offered up this reminder:
This is what is most important: to be well-grounded. I must set my foundation on solid ground and let everything that I am be built on that. To be sure, I fully intend to subscribe to a few news and business publications. I want to be that informed, well-rounded individual. But my time in God’s Word comes first. It defines me. It sets the tone. The others will help me be well-rounded; God’s Word will help me be a better man as it keeps me well-grounded.
Soli DEO Gloria!
It hit me like a ton of bricks as I read my Bible this morning. This passage beautifully states the foundation of all that I know to be true:
Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. ~ Psalms 90:2
This reality puts my life into proper context, even as my heart breaks for this lost world. You see, man seeks to understand the foundation and purpose of our existence, and in doing so has concocted many theories and false gods to try and explain the basics of who we are and why we’re here. Since man’s reasoning is not perfect, man cannot discern the truth on his own, so we adopt beliefs with no true foundation, even going so far as to say that what is true for you is true and what is true for me is true, even if those so-called truths conflict. What a sad state of affairs!
We cannot come to an understanding of our purpose for existence until we understand who God is. God is the sovereign creator of all things – including man. He is not made; He was not born; He was not created. God is not constrained by time; He is eternal. He is holy. He is just. God is God. How do I know this is true? God says so, in His Word. Yes, it’s that simple.
What freedom this knowledge gives! I serve the Creator of all things, the sovereign God Almighty! Praise His Holy name! Standing upon this foundational truth, I go back into His Word and learn about His amazing love for each and every one of us. God’s Word, from Genesis to Revelation, points to one Person: Jesus Christ.
Has it been awhile since you’ve read your Bible? Open it today. God is waiting patiently to reveal Himself to you.
1 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and thefish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
It’s Monday! If this doesn’t motivate us to take on the work week with gusto, nothing will! We are here to serve an awesome God, the One who created all that exists – the One who created us to serve Him! May His name be praised and glorified for ever and ever! May our actions point straight to Him!
Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, thank you for your marvelous creation, and thank you for another day full of opportunities to serve. Let my words and actions today point straight to you. In Jesus’ name – AMEN and AMEN!
