2015 Photo-A-Day 2.25.2015

My winter mountain adventure with IMA continues as we’ve relocated to beautiful Breckenridge, Colorado. We spent part of yesterday afternoon at the Grand Lodge on Peak 7, where several in our party arranged for their rental equipment for today’s skiing. I haven’t skied in years, but it sure is tempting, especially considering the fresh snow that awaits! It is breathtakingly beautiful here!

This Texan’s Perspective: Philadelphia in the Snow

Business travel sometimes throws a curve ball, resulting in changed plans and some degree of inconvenience. In my current situation, I find myself spending my Saturday looking out my window at the Philadelphia Airport Hilton as I await my delayed departure later this afternoon. But, hey, life is what you make it. Not only did I have a successful business trip, but I got to experience this beautiful city in the tranquility of a winter wonderland. Here are a few of the images I captured as I walked downtown Philadelphia in Thursday evening’s snowstorm.

My evening began with a delicious dinner at Sbraga. The overall experience of Sbraga was outstanding; my full review will soon be posted on Yelp. Sitting at the bar as the snow began to fall was quite surreal.

After my wonderful dinner, I checked into my home for the evening, the Doubletree Philadelphia Center City. The night was still young, however, and a visit for Philadelphia for me is not complete without ducking into Moriarty’s Pub.

I took the photo below during my walk from the Doubletree to Moriarty’s. I’m always amazed at how a beautiful snowfall can quiet the big city. People passing by on the sidewalk exchanged smiles. There was an air of peace and tranquility as the snow transformed this bustling downtown into a winter wonderland. Later, I enhanced the photo and posted it on Instagram.

Moriarty’s is always a warm and friendly place. Tonight was no different, although many patrons apparently chose to keep warm at home rather than venture out to the pub. Since I had already enjoyed a fabulous dinner, I skipped their wings this evening – but for the record, Moriarity’s wings are my favorites. Anywhere. Nonetheless, my pint of Guinness hit the spot as I watched the snow fly outside from my warm perch at the bar.

Venturing out of Moriarty’s to head back to the Doubletree, the snow was really coming down. Few people were on the streets, although it was still quite early. I decided to catch the first half of the Sugar Bowl in the lobby bar at the Doubletree.

I snapped this photo on my iPhone as I sat at the bar. Later, I enhanced it with a B&W filter and posted the enhanced version on Instagram. I was pleased to notice that even the native Philadelphians I encountered were as mesmerized by the snowfall as this Texan was!

Finally, it was time to head upstairs. My room was on the 26th floor so I took a few shots from that perspective before turning my undivided attention to rooting for Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

Indeed, life does throw some curve balls our way now and then. Although I would have preferred to be home with my family, I decided to make the most of this trip into winter. I thank God for the opportunity, and look forward to the next curve that comes my way!

Texas Ice

Even our Golden Retriever is avoiding the cold water! 12.6.2013

Every few years, we North Texans are blessed with ice raining from above and coating everything from roads to power lines to trees. We’ve watched countless news reports of vehicles stranded in lines miles long on the frozen Interstates – most of those are truckers just trying to get their loads through our region to their final destination. I know of at least one friend who is still without power at her home. I’m hearing that the ice storm of December 5-6, 2013 is much earlier than normal. Perhaps that’s true; the last major ice storm in these parts wreaked havoc on the 2011 Super Bowl at Jerry World.

Here in Keller, Texas we are just south and east of the worst-hit areas of Denton and surrounding communities. Fortunately we sustained no damage at my house. My pool pump, however, decided that just before the storm would be the perfect time to lose its prime. Since the motor still runs I’m hoping it’s repairable, so to keep it from freezing up and cracking I built a structure out of cardboard, plastic and duct tape. Inside of is a heat lamp that has been illuminated since the mercury first approached freezing. As I admired my handiwork the thought came to mind that even Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame would be proud!

IMG_3203We used our “iced in” time to enjoy some much needed R&R. As the ice fell Thursday evening we enjoyed NBC’s live presentation of “The Sound of Music”. I thought it was a cool production. Friday I worked from my home office, then treated the family to a double feature of “Jingle All the Way” starring The Arnold and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” featuring my favorite family man Clark W. Griswold played by Chevy Chase. Our double feature Saturday evening was “White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Allen and “Four Christmases” with Vince Vaughn and Reece Witherspoon.

Life moves fast – so fast that we sometimes neglect our need for down time. Over the past few days, God gave us some much needed down time in the form of ice falling from the sky and, for that, I am truly thankful. And, as an added bonus, I am that much more ready to get back to work – that is, once the roads clear!
